Wringing extra words out of other people’s writing was a big part of my career. I agree with all of these and will add another that doesn’t get enough attention: back. The word has too many meanings so must be surrounded by other words to make sense. “I went back into the kitchen and put the knife back in the kitchen drawer” can easily be shortened to “I returned the knife to the kitchen drawer.” Replace “went back to” or “gave it back” with returned, “said it back” with repeated, “read/watched it back” with reviewed… I could go on like this all day.
