A nom de plume can result in greater openess. Ironic? I don’t think so. Photo by Crazy Cake on Unsplash

Why you might want to write under a pseudonym

Maybe a pen name could benefit you

For a while, I changed my username to a nom de plume. Recently I reverted to using my real name again and I’ve edited this piece to reflect that.

I absolutely do not regret having used a pseudonym during the time I felt I needed it. If you’re thinking about whether to use a pen name on Medium or elsewhere online, I hope this provides a few insights for you.

Come as who you are is generally great advice but it makes several presumptions that don’t apply to everyone. The notion that to be taken seriously you absolutely must write under your real name can be unbearably stifling under certain circumstances.

How do you make a living?

Only use your real name is highly privileged advice. It presumes your employer doesn’t care what you write online. Or they’re so lovely you couldn’t possibly have a criticism of them. Or you’re so highly valued they wouldn’t dare retaliate. Or you can readily find a new job. Or you’re successfully self-employed with clients who accept you no matter what. Or you’re independently wealthy. Or retired.

Or that you’re never going to write anything your employer (or clients) might not be thrilled with.
