This is a subtle yet crucial concept in understanding abuse. Victims don’t have to be the ones who are directly struck, screamed at, deprived or threatened. Victims are anyone the abuser has authority over who know the abuser will “go there.”

Destroying a child’s personal property is an act of violence that says “I could destroy you next.” Even a threat to destroy property is violence.
