The spouse and I recently ate at a nice breakfast place. When the bill came, it was higher than I’d expected. I calculated a 20% tip and was about to add it when I noticed that a “standard” 18% tip was already factored in. That would have been a 41.6% tip considering the 20% on top of the 18% tip. Crazy! I recalibrated and added just a 2% to the food portion of the bill to bring it to my customary 20%. What a royal pain in the ass.
I understand including a gratuity on the bill for a large dining party as I know plenty of waitstaff who’ve been stiffed after waiting a drinking and dining table of 12 for 3 hours, but a couple out for breakfast? Give me a break.
