“The onus is on the receiver” simply means that it’s your responsibility to put your phone notifications, ringers etc. on a schedule that works for you. Do Not Disturb is basically the default setup on my cell phone.
There are very few people who have access to call me after 8pm, and those are people who could plausibly need my emergency assistance. One of them recently called me unnecessarily at 2am lost that access. Her poor judgment/abuse of privilege means she’ll now need to take any real emergencies elsewhere. Maybe that’s cold but it’s up to me to control my devices.
It is foolish to expect everyone to memorize our sleep, work, and dining schedules and time zone when we can simply adjust a few settings on our devices to prevent untimely notifications.
