It’s not imagination you’re describing, it’s credulity. Very young children are normally credulous. You tell them about fairies and they simply believe you. Around age six most start to question things as they begin discerning fantasy from reality. It’s their healthy curiosity that leads them to the truth. It doesn’t mean they lack imagination, it means they’ve outgrown their babyhood credulity. Some people remain credulous throughout their lives—they’ll believe just about anything if it suits their fancy. Others suspended their disbelief for the fun of it—we know the fish are on strings but we still appreciate the illusion. Kids who see past the illusions want to pull back the curtain to show us we’re not getting over on them. The boy with the robot dog was telling you “I’m not a stupid little baby, lady. I know the difference between a toy and a live creature!” He doesn’t lack imagination; he wants respect for his cognitive maturity.
