It’s interesting to think about it as the era of the rock star. It was probably the exception rather than the rule, but it went on long enough to seem like the norm. We do still have mega music stars (think: Taylor Swift) but there are so many media channels and such a long tail of niche sub genres that the idea of “a current song that everybody knows” is quaint. I’m older but do listen to newer rock (especially the sub genre of psyche rock). I can name every permutation of the Osees but couldn’t name one current Top 40 hit.
