It sounds a lot like the godawful All is Lost, a Robert Redford flick where he plays a widower “sailor” (using that term hella loosely) who embarks on a solo navigation and makes every noob mistake you can imagine. If you’re ever up for some sidesplitting laughter just find a discussion of that dog on any sailing forum. I saw it with the tall ship sailor in my life, and listening to her rant at TV was far more entertaining than the movie itself.
