I used a Pearl Jam lyric (from “Whipping”) in one of my novels. Permission did require jumping through a few hoops with Hal Leonard but the price tag was small. I did it because it mattered to the story. Writers should understand that lyrics aren’t free decorations they can just add to their text willy-nilly.
