I suspect there are two huge factors at play: 1. A societal attitude that teens, especialy girls, are untrustworthy and insufferable. It’s common to hear these sentiments as early as when the fetal sex is determined. Parents of girl toddlers will hear “Watch out! When she’s a teen you’ll have your hands full!” the moment she shows any sign of personality or independence. 2. Parents of teens often fail miserably at adjusting for age in matters of responsibility, privacy, curfews, respect, trust, and freedoms. Often much struggle can be sidestepped by accepting the fact that they’re growing into young adults and stopping treating them like they are ten year olds. Don’t use punishments to control them. Tell them you trust them. Give them room to make and learn from their mistakes.

Saltier than a cocktail peanut and here to get ignored by a much wider audience.
