I love the use of food for both context and characterization. You’re so right about overdoing it; I still haven’t forgiven Ian McEwan for those 78 words of blather about “the filigreed lacework of grease” in a pan of roasted potatoes that had no bearing on the plot of Atonement.

Also, it’s long past time for writers to abandon the hackneyed “picked at a salad.”
