I edited other people’s writing for publication for decades. Editors have a term for writers who think what they’ve written cannot possibly be improved: Golden Words Syndrome.

Good writers understand that all writing is editing. Most people are not good writers because most people don’t edit beyond spellcheck or Grammarly.

That said, a good editor will edit with a light touch wherever possible, and work closely with the writer to preserve voice if there is any.
