Factoid was coined by SNL comedian Rich Hall in the 1980s, and was one of many silly words he created, which he called sniglets. Some others (off the top of my head) were pedextrious, fenderberg, and carperpetuation. They were jokes and it’s funny that some, like factoid, are now used earnestly by people who don’t know any better.
