Being a good partner is not a balancing act between “being super nice” and “being a denigrating, self-centered bully.” The “being nice” part is just a performance to keep you around for more abuse. An abuser can never, ever do enough “nice” things to make the abuse OK. There is no reward at the end of your life (or any other point on your life) for tolerating abuse.
