An archeological dig is a great analogy for novel writing. One of my favorites is when there’s a piece that doesn’t quite fit, but persists draft after draft. Then “how it fits” falls out of the sky, hits you on the head and makes perfect sense. Also, nothing gives a novel depth quite like writing scenes or drafts from alternate characters POVs, even if they never make it to prime time.
